The Luxury Log Cabin: Sounds like a Juxtaposition, Lives like a Dream

by Alyson Pitarre

Abraham Lincoln famously spent his early years in a one-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky, moving with his family to another in southern Indiana several years later.

But despite their association with the 16th president of the United States — ever heard of the game Lincoln Logs? — the earliest log cabins have their roots in northern Europe, not America. When the humble structures started popping up stateside, they were courtesy of Finnish and German immigrants.

Given their history, and their rough-hewn materials and primitive building techniques, it’s not surprising that log cabins are largely thought of as informal, humble abodes. But many of today’s structures are anything but humble, as you can see by these luxury log homes.

What this quaint cabin lacks in square footage, it more than makes up for in charm and expansive outdoor space. The log exterior opens to a magical interior that is almost entirely sheathed in wood, including the kitchen’s custom birds-eye maple cabinets and counters. Full-width logs travel up and across the soaring ceilings in the living spaces and large loft.

This home includes a stone fireplace in the living room; a 30-foot x nine-foot screened-in porch; a detached garage with a two-bedroom, one-bath apartment above; and an unfinished basement. But the most exquisite features: the 45 acres of pristine, land and 563 feet of level frontage on the Three Lakes Chain of 28 Lakes.

Who knew you could live the log cabin life just an hour from downtown Chicago? Though, this is no standard log cabin. The original one-bedroom, one-bath cabin has been merged with contemporary construction, the finished exterior marrying logs and stone with clean lines and a night-hued façade.

Inside, it’s modern all the way, with a sleek eat-in kitchen; gorgeous hardwood floors; updated bathrooms; designer light fixtures; and an infrared sauna. You’ll relish the 20+ acres of wooded landscape and the nature views from nearly everywhere in the home, including serene vistas of the pond from the private primary suite and its large cedar deck.

Large expanses of glass and stone accents complement the massive display of logs on the exterior of this impressive luxury cabin. Inside, the use of wide wood planks is as spectacular as the verdant views. It’s on the floors. It’s on the walls. It’s on the ceiling. And it’s joined by a beautifully hewn half-log staircase and rail and hand-peeled log rails.

Gather in front of the great room’s grand stacked-stone fireplace, at the mountain stream, or among the extensive covered and uncovered outdoor space in the treetops.
